Lighter: trading, LIT staking and LLP participation

Lighter is an order book trading platform whose operations are verified on Ethereum. Users trade spot and perpetual markets, allocate capital to pools and stake LIT for LLP access, rewards and trading fee discounts.

Three ways to participate, three roles for capital

USDC backs perpetual positions, LIT can be staked, and an LLP deposit gives the participant a share of pool capital.

USDC

Trading collateral

The base collateral of Lighter’s perpetual account. Profit, loss and funding change the available balance.

LIT

Access and rewards

The Lighter Infrastructure Token can be staked. Staked tokens unlock an LLP deposit allowance and Premium/Advanced fee discounts; staking program participants receive LIT rewards.

LLP

A share of trading pool capital

The Lighter Liquidity Pool provides liquidity and takes over positions during liquidations. Strategy results change the value of participation; losing trades reduce pool capital.

Asset → action → outcome

Trade, allocate USDC to LLP or unstake LIT

LLP access starts with LIT staking: each staked LIT allows a deposit of up to 10 USDC. The pool deposit is a separate action.

USDC → trading position

  1. 01Fund the account
  2. 02Place an order
  3. 03Close the position → withdraw the balance

Deposit through a route offered in the app. Orders execute through the order book. For perpetual positions, profit, loss and funding affect the account balance; withdrawals use the available balance.

Stake LIT → deposit USDC into LLP

  1. 01Stake LIT
  2. 02Deposit USDC within the allowance
  3. 03Share in the LLP result

Each staked LIT permits a deposit of up to 10 USDC into LLP. The pool trades and participates in liquidations. Its capital is allocated across strategies, with profits and losses reflected in participation value.

Operation terms ↗

Unstake LIT

  1. 01Request unstaking
  2. 02Wait 3 days
  3. 03Receive LIT

Returning staked LIT requires a three-day waiting period. Reducing the stake changes the LLP allowance and Premium/Advanced discount tier. Capital in LLP is withdrawn from that position separately.

Operation terms ↗

From a signed order to Ethereum verification

Lighter Core batches trading operations and proves their correct execution. Ethereum stores the system state and verifies the proofs.

ORDER

Execution rules

Users sign operations. The system matches orders and calculates collateral and liquidations under predefined rules; the proof covers the correctness of these actions.

ETHEREUM

Proofs and data

Proofs and state transition data are published on Ethereum. Contracts update exchange state after successful verification.

EXIT

Priority requests

Critical operations can be requested through a queue on Ethereum. If the operator fails to process them within the required period, an exit mode uses published data to reconstruct account state.

Lighter markets, pools and interfaces

The trading interface combines markets and capital management. Public Pools delegate a strategy to an operator; Lighter on Robinhood Chain maintains separate accounts.

Spot and perpetual markets

Lighter

An order book, trading account and position management. Standard charges no execution fees; Plus and Premium/Advanced have paid terms.

Liquidity and liquidations

LLP

The pool accepts participant capital and acts as a counterparty in trading and liquidation operations. The deposit allowance depends on the amount of LIT staked.

Operator strategies

Public Pools

Participants deposit capital and receive shares in their chosen pool. An operator trades pooled funds and takes a fee from profits when participants withdraw.

LIT staking

LIT Staking

LIT rewards, LLP access and Premium/Advanced fee discounts. Unstaking has a three-day waiting period.

Build trading applications

Lighter API

REST API, WebSocket and SDKs for orders, market data, history and transfers. Trading requests use an API key signature. Fast withdrawals and transfers to another owner also require the owner’s wallet signature.

A separate exchange on Robinhood Chain

Lighter RH

USDG is the base collateral. Accounts and balances are separate from Lighter mainnet, and Premium/Advanced tiers depend on 14-day trading volume.

Deposit and return funds

Direct deposits use Ethereum; routes from other networks involve transfers and swaps. Lighter restricts access in specified jurisdictions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and China.

01

Choose the account, network and asset

Select the account to fund and an available deposit route in the app. A transfer from another network may convert funds into the credited asset; fees and the amount received belong to that route.

02

Make capital available

The available balance depends on open positions and collateral requirements. Pool capital is returned by withdrawing the relevant share; LIT staking has its own exit period.

03

Choose Secure or Fast

A Secure withdrawal returns funds to the account owner’s address on Ethereum. Fast sends USDC to any Ethereum address through a separate withdrawal pool and requires the owner’s wallet signature. Fast withdrawals have a fee and an amount limit.

Who receives trading payments

Trade execution fees go to the protocol. Funding moves between traders. LLP results come from the trades and liquidations in which the pool participates.

Traders using paid accounts

Paid accounts → LIT buybacks

Plus and Premium/Advanced accounts pay execution fees. The protocol uses trading fee revenue to buy LIT on the market.

LLP trading and liquidations

LLP → participant results

The pool receives the results of its strategies and liquidation operations. Losses reduce the capital allocated to the affected strategy.

Profits or losses affect their shares

Standard, Plus and Premium/Advanced

Account type determines execution fees, added latency and request limits. These terms describe Lighter mainnet; the exchange on Robinhood Chain has its own tiers.

STANDARD

Zero trading fees

Maker and taker executions carry no fee. Taker orders and order cancellation or modification have added latency.

PLUS

More requests

A paid tier with increased request limits. It serves applications that need more exchange requests while retaining standard latency.

PREMIUM

Faster execution and LIT discounts

A paid tier with lower taker latency and no added delay for cancellations or Post Only orders, which enter the book without executing immediately. LIT staking reduces maker and taker fees through staking tiers.

Practical questions

1Do I need to buy LIT to trade?

A Standard account does not require buying LIT. LIT staking provides LLP access, staking program rewards and Premium/Advanced fee discounts. USDC is the base collateral of the perpetual account on Lighter mainnet.

2How does LIT relate to an LLP deposit?

Each staked LIT permits a deposit of up to 10 USDC into LLP. The USDC deposit creates participation in the pool; its value changes with the results of trading and liquidation strategies.

3When does staked LIT become available?

An unstaking request starts a three-day waiting period. LLP shares and their capital are withdrawn separately from staked LIT.

4Who receives funding payments?

Funding settles hourly between long and short positions. Longs pay when the rate is positive; shorts pay when it is negative. The exchange takes no fee from this payment.

5How do Secure and Fast withdrawals differ?

A Secure withdrawal returns funds to the account owner’s address on Ethereum. Fast sends USDC to any Ethereum address through a separate withdrawal pool and requires the owner’s wallet signature.

6Does my balance carry over to Lighter on Robinhood Chain?

Lighter on Robinhood Chain maintains separate accounts and balances, with USDG as base collateral. It has its own deposits, trading parameters and fee tiers.

7Where is access restricted?

Lighter restricts users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China and other jurisdictions listed in its terms. The terms cover the interface, protocol, API and LIT-related services.
