How to read a crypto liquidation heatmap

1

Start with the timeframe

Use 1h for an immediate flush and 12h or 24h to separate a meaningful cascade from minute-to-minute noise.

2

Compare longs with shorts

A red imbalance means leveraged longs were forced to sell. A green imbalance means shorts were forced to buy back.

3

Read brightness as size

A brighter cell represents more observed USD notional around that execution-price and time bucket. It is not a probability score.

4

Add funding and open interest

Crowded funding plus high reported open interest can add context. Liquidations alone are not an entry or exit signal.

Observed liquidations, not estimated future levels

Yieldo records forced-close events published by the exchanges. Some competing maps model where positions may liquidate in the future; those estimated zones answer a different question and are not mixed into this chart.

Coverage and limitations

Coverage is limited to USDT linear perpetual futures on Binance and Bybit. Bybit publishes all liquidations every 500 ms. Binance publishes only the latest liquidation order for a symbol within each 1,000 ms window, so Binance totals can undercount bursts. USD notional is execution price multiplied by executed quantity.

What is a crypto liquidation?

A liquidation occurs when an exchange force-closes a leveraged position because its margin can no longer support the loss. Long liquidations create forced selling; short liquidations create forced buying. Clusters show where leverage was removed, not where price must move next.

Sources: official Binance and Bybit public WebSocket market streams. Collection runs continuously and does not require private account data or API keys.

Crypto liquidation heatmap FAQ

What does red mean on the liquidation heatmap?

Red cells are observed long liquidations: leveraged long positions were force-closed through selling. Brighter cells represent more USD notional.

What does green mean on the liquidation heatmap?

Green cells are observed short liquidations: leveraged short positions were force-closed through buying.

Does this map predict the next liquidation levels?

No. Yieldo visualizes liquidation events already published by Binance and Bybit. It does not estimate the entry prices or leverage of open positions.

Why can Binance and Bybit totals differ?

Liquidity and trader positioning differ by venue. Their public feeds also differ: Bybit publishes all liquidation events every 500 ms, while Binance publishes the latest order per symbol in each 1,000 ms window.

Can I trade from the heatmap alone?

No. A liquidation cluster confirms forced deleveraging, but it does not determine the next price direction. Use it with price structure, funding, open interest and risk limits.
