A spread opens whenever the same coin trades at a different price on Kraken than on another exchange at the same moment — buy where it is cheap, transfer, sell where it is dear, and the gap is your gross profit. The number that matters is net, not gross: withdrawal fees, trading fees on both legs, and the minutes it takes to move funds all eat into the spread, so a 0.3% gap can vanish entirely on an illiquid coin with a $5 withdrawal fee. Order-book depth decides how much of the quoted spread is actually tradeable — a wide spread on a thin book might only support a $200 trade before the price moves against you. Speed is the other constraint: spreads on Kraken typically close within minutes as other traders and bots arbitrage them away, so by the time a withdrawal confirms on-chain the opportunity may already be gone.
