Ethena: the USDe dollar, sUSDe shares and ENA

Ethena issues USDe, a digital dollar backed by crypto and other reserve assets. Part of the system’s income goes to the sUSDe vault. ENA provides a role in governance; you can stake it separately to receive sENA.

USDe and ENA form two different pairs

Depositing USDe gives you sUSDe shares. Depositing ENA gives you sENA shares. Each position redeems into the asset originally deposited.

USDe

A digital dollar

USDe is used for payments, swaps and collateral in applications. Backing assets and Ethena’s hedging positions support its dollar value.

sUSDe

A share of the USDe vault

Deposit USDe to receive sUSDe. Rewards enter the vault in USDe, increasing the USDe backing each share. Your wallet’s sUSDe balance stays the same.

ENA

The governance token

Holders participate in Ethena governance, including committee appointments and decisions about parameters, backing strategies and income allocation.

sENA

A share of staked ENA

Staking ENA creates sENA. ENA rewards allocated to this vault increase the ENA backing each share; these allocations require separate decisions.

Asset → share → redemption

Stake USDe, recover it or choose sENA

sUSDe rewards appear in the share’s USDe value. Exiting starts with a request and ends with claiming funds after its timer. ENA uses a separate vault.

USDe → sUSDe

  1. 01Get USDe
  2. 02Deposit USDe → receive sUSDe
  3. 03Rewards increase USDe per share

The ordinary market route starts with swapping into USDe. Deposit USDe through Ethena’s interface to receive sUSDe in your wallet. Income is added to the vault’s assets; rewards accrue without a separate claim transaction.

Operation terms ↗

sUSDe → USDe

  1. 01Request an exit → shares are redeemed
  2. 02Wait for the request’s timer
  3. 03Claim USDe in a separate transaction

The request burns sUSDe shares and moves the corresponding USDe into a separate Silo contract. The waiting period is fixed when you submit the request. An additional request from the same address combines the funds and resets the timer. Claim USDe through the interface once the timer ends.

Operation terms ↗

ENA → sENA

  1. 01Deposit ENA → receive sENA
  2. 02Participate in governance with sENA
  3. 03Request an exit → 7 days → ENA

sENA represents your share of the ENA vault and provides a way to participate in governance. Rewards, when allocated to the vault, accrue in ENA through the share value. Redeeming back into ENA has its own seven-day waiting period.

How Ethena supports USDe’s dollar value

For volatile backing assets, Ethena combines ownership of the asset with a short position of similar size. Stable assets, lending and funds form other parts of the backing.

SPOT + SHORT

The asset and its price hedge

If the crypto asset rises in value, the short loses value; if the asset falls, the short gains value. The positions offset each other’s price movements. With positive funding, long positions also pay the short.

LENDING / RWA

Other backing assets

Liquid stablecoins, collateralized loans and fund assets can also support USDe. Each instrument generates income under its own terms.

CUSTODY

The custodian and the trading venue

With off-exchange custody, assets remain with the custodian while their value is delegated to the hedging venue as margin. Custody and margining have separate roles.

sUSDe

The vault receives rewards in USDe

Income originates from USDe’s backing assets. Allocated rewards enter the sUSDe vault in USDe and increase the value of its shares.

From a dollar in your wallet to applications and payments

The main interface handles USDe, sUSDe and sENA. Other products provide payments, infrastructure for partners and ways to use these assets in applications.

The main interface

Ethena

Swap into USDe, stake USDe or ENA, request exits and claim funds. Direct USDe minting and redemption are available to approved counterparties.

Save, send and spend

Ethena Pay

The Ethena Pay beta combines a self-custodial wallet, transfers and card payments. Available features and countries follow Pay’s separate terms.

A separate dollar product

USDtb

USDtb is backed by tokenized U.S. Treasury fund products and a stablecoin reserve. Anchorage Digital Bank handles issuance, redemption and reserve management; direct operations are available to its customers.

Infrastructure for partners

Ethena Whitelabel

A partner defines its dollar product and distribution. Ethena provides issuance, backing, custody and reserve management.

Collateral and borrowing

Morpho

Morpho Blue markets can pair USDe collateral with a separate loan asset. Each isolated market has one collateral asset, one loan asset and its loan-to-value limit.

Ethena market on Ethereum

Aave

Aave V4 has a dedicated Ethena ecosystem market on Ethereum. USDe can be supplied there, with collateral and borrowing parameters set for that market.

Start with the product and operation you need

The main sUSDe and sENA paths run on Ethereum, with ETH paying network fees. Ethena’s main dApp requires an eligible jurisdiction and excludes US persons. Acquisition of sUSDe through the service is also restricted for EU/EEA residents.

01

Get USDe

USDe trades on external exchanges and liquidity pools. Swaps use the market price and the venue’s terms. The token’s network must match the network of your next operation.

02

Stake USDe or ENA

For Ethereum operations, connect a wallet holding the relevant asset and ETH for fees. The interface provides separate sUSDe and sENA vaults; check your request’s timer when exiting.

03

Mint and redeem directly

Counterparties complete Ethena’s verification and approval process. This route connects USDe with backing assets; an ordinary DEX swap uses existing market liquidity.

Where the income comes from and where it goes

System income combines the result of hedging positions with income from backing assets. Allocation connects it to the sUSDe vault, the reserve and other protocol uses.

Derivatives market

Funding and basis

Basis is the difference between the futures price and the asset’s spot price. Ethena’s short positions receive positive funding; negative funding reverses the funding payment.

ENA: governance, sENA and the approved buyback model

ENA holders participate through votes and committee appointments. Committees manage day-to-day risk decisions and protocol parameters.

VOTES

Rules for the protocol

Governance covers backing assets, income strategies, risk parameters and fund allocation. ENA and sENA provide ways to participate in governance.

sENA

Rewards in ENA

When ENA rewards are allocated to the vault, they increase the ENA backing each sENA share. Terms and allocation decisions apply to this position separately from sUSDe rewards.

SEPTEMBER 2026

Buybacks linked to USDe supply milestones

The approved model links the start of ENA buybacks to a 14-day average USDe supply of $7.5 billion. The model directs 95% of the net income paid to the Ethena Foundation under it toward ENA purchases. The share allocated to the Foundation rises with USDe supply milestones.

Practical questions

1Do I need ENA to get sUSDe?

The sUSDe vault takes USDe deposits. ENA is staked separately into sENA and is connected to Ethena governance. The main Ethereum paths use ETH for network fees.

2How do sUSDe rewards appear in my wallet?

Rewards enter the vault in USDe. Each sUSDe share then represents more USDe, so the number of shares in your wallet can stay the same. Redeem the share or sell it on the market to realize its value.

3When can I claim USDe after requesting an exit?

Each request fixes its own waiting period. Once it ends, claim USDe in a separate transaction. A new request from the same address adds funds and resets the timer. Selling sUSDe on the market is a separate route at the available market price.

4How does USDe redemption differ from selling?

Approved counterparties redeem USDe directly with Ethena for backing assets. Selling on an exchange or DEX swaps USDe with another participant through the venue’s liquidity.

5Which network hosts the main contracts?

The main vaults run on Ethereum. ENA: 0x57e114B691Db790C35207b2e685D4A43181e6061. USDe: 0x4c9EDD5852cd905f086C759E8383e09bff1E68B3. Tokens also exist on other networks; each operation uses its own network and corresponding contract.

6What eligibility rules apply to the dApp and Pay?

The main Ethena dApp requires an eligible jurisdiction and excludes prohibited persons, including US persons. sUSDe acquisition through the service is also restricted for EU/EEA residents. Ethena Pay has separate eligibility, country and card-feature rules.
