How to move USDC and ETH to Base from an exchange

You are holding USDC or ETH on a centralised exchange and you want it on Base — in the right network, at a cost you saw before you pressed send. That is the job this page covers: the three routes onto Base that exist, what each one asks of you, and how to read our live withdrawal table on the day you use it. What Base is, in the terms that matter for a transfer

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase on Optimism's OP Stack — the node software is published openly — and the network has been open to everyone since 9 August 2023. For moving money, three properties do all the work.

First, it is an ordinary EVM chain. Base's own documentation states it without hedging: "Base is a standard EVM chain, so any Ethereum tool, wallet, or library works unchanged." Your Ethereum address is your Base address — the same string, a different network. Second, gas is paid in ETH; there is no separate network coin to acquire first. Third, Base is its own entry in an exchange's network selector: Ethereum and Base are not interchangeable there, and the selector is where a transfer is decided.

Route one: a direct withdrawal from Coinbase

Coinbase sends assets straight into the Base network, and Base's documentation points out that this is "not technically a bridge". The funds simply arrive on Base, and in steps this is the shortest route there is. The constraint is access rather than mechanics: by the public lists of supported countries, Coinbase does not include Russia, so for a large part of our audience the next route is the working answer.

Route two: withdraw from another exchange to the Base network

Most large exchanges list Base as a withdrawal network alongside Ethereum and the other chains they support. You choose the asset, choose Base in the network selector, paste an EVM address, and the exchange charges its own withdrawal fee for sending it. No bridge interface, no second transaction, no approval to sign.

What differs between venues is the fee, the minimum size of the withdrawal, and whether the route is open at this moment. Those three things are exactly what our table tracks. Exchanges including Binance, Bybit and OKX appear in it; which of them fits your particular transfer is a question the table answers on the day, and not one an article can answer in advance.

Route three: bridge from Ethereum

If the coins are already in your own wallet on Ethereum rather than on an exchange, you need a bridge rather than a withdrawal. The official interface that used to live at bridge.base.org has been deprecated. Base's documentation now points to third-party routes in its place, and it explicitly disclaims responsibility for those services.

So take bridge addresses only from the ecosystem bridges page in the official docs, never from a search result or a message. And compare the cost against a plain exchange withdrawal: for assets still sitting on an exchange, the bridge is a step you pay for twice.

What a Base transaction costs, structurally

Base's fee specification splits every transaction into two components: an L2 execution fee for the work the chain itself does, plus an L1 security fee for posting the data to Ethereum. The documentation notes that the second component is usually the larger of the two.

We quote no figure for either part, on purpose: a number written into article text is a claim about a moment that has already passed by the time you read it. The cost you need is live, in the table below.

How to read it

  • The network must say Base. The same ticker is withdrawable across several networks, and a row for Base tells you nothing about the same asset over Ethereum.
  • Check the minimum, not only the fee. A route can be open and still refuse the size you intended to send.
  • "Closed" means not today, not never. Exchanges suspend and resume networks routinely. A closed route is a fact about this moment, not a verdict on the exchange.
  • Check the date beside the table. These values come from exchange APIs and change without notice — which is why the freshness timestamp sits next to the data, not in a footnote.

One thing the table deliberately does not show is history: we show current status, not history. A record of when each exchange froze Base withdrawals in the past is not something we have verified as of the check date, so we do not imply one.

Adding the Base network to MetaMask or another wallet

Base is a standard EVM chain, so MetaMask or any other Ethereum wallet works unchanged. If yours does not list Base, add the network by hand: chain ID 8453, the RPC endpoint at mainnet.base.org, currency symbol ETH, and basescan.org as the block explorer. Verify each value against the page in Base's documentation rather than against any copy of it — including this one.

Native USDC, and the legacy USDbC

Base has native USDC issued by Circle, at contract 0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913. There is also an older token on the chain, USDbC, described by Circle as "Bridged USDC from Ethereum" and treated as legacy. The native token is the one you want. After the first transfer, check the contract your wallet shows against the one above; the ticker will not tell them apart.

Checklist before you press send

  1. Address. The same EVM address you use on Ethereum, copied from the wallet rather than from a chat.
  2. Network, twice. Base in the exchange's selector and Base selected in the wallet you will open afterwards.
  3. Wallet configured. If you added the network by hand, confirm the chain ID and RPC match the official guide before anything is sent.
  4. A small transfer first. Send a token amount, confirm it arrives and is visible on the explorer, then send the rest. One extra withdrawal fee buys you out of the errors that cannot be undone.
  5. Keep ETH for gas. Gas on Base is ETH, so a wallet holding only USDC cannot pay for its own next transaction. Plan for that in the same session.
  6. USDC: native, not USDbC. Check the contract.

If the route is closed

A closed route is a fact about this moment. Recheck the table later, watching the refresh date, and look at the other venues in it — a suspension on one exchange says nothing about the others. If the assets are already in your own wallet on Ethereum, the bridge route applies instead. What is not worth doing is sending over a different network and hoping to move the funds across afterwards.

FAQ

Do I need a separate address for the Base network?

No. Base is a standard EVM chain, so the address you use on Ethereum is the same address on Base. What changes is the network you select — on the exchange when withdrawing, and in the wallet when you open it afterwards.

My wallet does not list Base. How do I add it?

Add the network by hand using the chain ID, RPC endpoint, currency symbol and block explorer listed in the article. Verify each value against the official Base documentation page before sending anything, rather than against a copy of it — including ours.

What is the difference between USDC and USDbC on Base?

USDC is the native token issued by Circle on Base. USDbC is the older bridged version, which Circle describes as bridged USDC from Ethereum and treats as legacy. When withdrawing, the native one is what you want; check the contract, not the ticker.

Is it cheaper to bridge or to withdraw from an exchange?

We do not answer that in text. The two are priced separately and both change without notice. Compare the live table above with what a bridge quotes you at that moment. If the assets are still on an exchange, the bridge adds a step you pay for twice.

The exchange shows Base withdrawals as closed. Is that permanent?

Closed means not today, not never — exchanges suspend and resume networks routinely. Recheck the table later and look at the refresh date beside it. We show current status, not history, so we cannot tell you how often a given exchange has suspended the route before.
