Polygon: the PoS network, bridge and POL

Polygon PoS is an EVM-compatible Ethereum sidechain with its own validators. It supports payments, swaps and smart-contract applications. POL pays for Polygon transactions, while validator delegation takes place on Ethereum. Agglayer connects separate chains within the broader Polygon infrastructure.

POL, bridged assets and sPOL

The network and asset form determine the operation.

POL

Polygon gas

POL on Polygon pays transaction fees. Native MATIC on this chain migrated automatically to POL; Ethereum MATIC follows a separate migration process.

BRIDGE

Asset on the other side

A bridge maps an Ethereum asset to its Polygon representation. A native stablecoin and a similarly named bridged version can have different contracts and redemption paths.

sPOL

Staking pool share

sPOL is an Ethereum ERC20 representing a share of pooled POL and accumulated rewards. Its exchange rate reflects staking results.

Asset lifecycle

Bridging and staking follow different paths

A PoS bridge withdrawal requires a separate Ethereum confirmation stage.

Ethereum → Polygon

  1. 01Ethereum asset
  2. 02Bridge locks the asset
  3. 03Mapped asset on Polygon

Portal identifies the supported asset and direction. A PoS bridge deposit locks the origin asset and creates its mapped representation on the other side.

Mechanism rules ↗

Polygon → Ethereum

  1. 01Burn the bridged representation
  2. 02Checkpoint and proof
  3. 03Claim on Ethereum

Starting a Polygon withdrawal begins a sequence. After a checkpoint, a proof allows the origin asset to be claimed through a separate Ethereum transaction.

Mechanism rules ↗

Delegate POL

  1. 01POL on Ethereum
  2. 02Delegate to a validator
  3. 03Rewards and eventual exit

Delegation is submitted on Ethereum Mainnet. A validator receives stake to support the network; the delegator shares rewards under that validator’s terms. Exiting involves an unbonding period.

PoS, Agglayer and liquid staking

These products serve different functions.

PoS

Application network

Mainnet uses chain ID 137 and POL for gas. Nodes and validators operate the sidechain; checkpoints connect its history to Ethereum.

AGGLAYER

Connecting separate chains

Agglayer provides cross-chain infrastructure. Connected chains retain their own parameters; a Polygon PoS balance belongs to that particular network.

sPOL

Transferable pool share

The staking interface issues sPOL. Holders can sell at an available DEX price or redeem through the unbonding process at the pool exchange rate.

Products and applications

Portal connects networks, Staking manages delegation and sPOL represents a pool share.

Bridge and assets

Polygon Portal

Select an asset and direction between Ethereum and Polygon and follow withdrawal stages.

Validators and delegation

Polygon Staking

Choose a validator, delegate POL, manage rewards and exit through Ethereum.

Liquid staking

sPOL

Deposit POL into a shared pool and receive sPOL. The pool uses a curated validator set.

Start with the transaction network

Polygon operations need a wallet on Polygon Mainnet and POL for gas. Delegation and Ethereum-side bridge operations use Ethereum Mainnet and ETH.

01

Select the network

Polygon mainnet is 137. Amoy is a separate test network with test assets.

02

Identify the asset

Select both network and token contract: POL, a native stablecoin and a bridged version follow different routes.

03

Choose an application

Aave V3 uses Polygon for lending; Polymarket uses it for event positions. Each application defines its own assets and rules.

Gas, validator rewards and delegation fees

Users pay POL gas for a Polygon transaction: the base fee is burned and the block validator receives the priority fee. Validators and delegators separately receive staking rewards after the selected validator’s commission. Ethereum operations incur ETH fees.

WALLET

Transfers and gas

STAKE

Manage delegation

A delegator receives position rewards and starts an exit through the Ethereum staking contract.

sPOL

Transfer or redeem

Transferring sPOL transfers the pool share. Redemption returns POL according to the exchange rate and exit procedure.

Practical questions

1Is Polygon PoS an Ethereum L2?

Polygon PoS is a sidechain with its own validators and Ethereum checkpoints. These define its security model.

2Why can I hold POL but not delegate it?

The delegation interface operates on Ethereum Mainnet. POL held on Polygon and POL on Ethereum are balances on different networks.

3Is one sPOL always one POL?

sPOL represents a pool share. Accumulated rewards change its exchange rate, while its DEX sale price is set by the market.
